Step by Step, a work of art in progress

Sometimes it looks all too easy, a couple of stitches here, a couple of snipes there and you have it: a work of art like none other. But the reality is that the creation of any work of art requires a skill, just like that of our the craftsmen and women who work at Pierotucci Italian Leather Factory. They have been trained by a master craftsman who has been working at Pierotucci for over 40 years. Passing down a skill, a trade, an art that was once passed down to him in a similar way. Below is a little collage of some of the steps in creating one of the newest additions to our the FORTUNATA Italian Leather Handbag Collection, the patchwork model.  At work is Marco attaching the lining for the side pockets of the tote bag, then you have Renza cleaning out lose threads after the side zip was put into place, and in the end you can see Marco working on attaching the rolled handles.  Each and everyone of these steps takes place right here at the Pierotucci Factory, which is open to the public for tours of our leather factory.Fortuanta Italian Leather Handbag Collection, a work of art in progress

Got a Red Hot Chili Pepper by the Handle

For more than one reason February is associated with red and hearts – Pierotucci is embracing the challenge to show you something red every day. Just a little reminder to Go Red for Women and take care of your heart.
Fortunata designer leather handbag with chili pepper

Nothing says good luck in Italy like a red hot chili pepper!  Here are a couple of our new FORTUNATA leather handbag models with piping red hot handles.  The traditional symbol of good luck throughout Italy is what gives this designer leather handbag its name.  Legend tells that the “corno” actually represents the horns of the goat Amalthea, who is said to have nursed the god Zeus with her milk.  Zeus then conferred the power to grant all wished to the horn of Amalthea – in effect making it a symbol of good luck.  Not only is the “corno” used as a source of good fortune and plenty – but that also explains where the horn of plenty or cornucopia comes from.  Whether it is true or not, Italians love to keep this trinket nearby so that they will be blessed with tanto ma tanto furtuna!

Soothing the heart with 3 relaxing activities in Florence Italy

For more than one reason February is associated with red and hearts – Pierotucci is embracing the challenge to show you something red every day. Just a little reminder to Go Red for Women and take care of your heart.

Florence: Art, Gelato and Italian Leather HandbagsA good rule of thumb is to indulge but not to exaggerated . . . however when in Florence, Italy – surrounded by all this “bontà” its hard to remember what is good for your heart!

The rich history and abundant pieces of breathtaking artwork is a constant – and even if you wanted to avoid the “stress” of seeing yet another display of artistic talent . . . you would have to walk around with your wool cap covering your eyes.

Another “delizia” that is next to impossible to avoid would be gelato . . . like anyone really wants to avoid eating yet another cup filled with this creamy delight.  Though not much into colored food … in this case you have to admit that it looks pretty yummy.  Even in the land of “gelato” we are always looking for something new to delight our international taste buds.  The photo caught our attention and the ingredients kept us reading more.

And of course the last (on our list) of things that are soothing to the heart: shopping for a new leather handbag.  No place like Florence offers you the feel of Italian leather, the quality produced from centuries of craftsman perfecting an art and the thrill of excitement over innovative designs.  Roaming the streets and window shopping can be just as tantalizing as visiting a real leather factory where they still cut and assemble bags like they have been doing throughout the last couple of hundred of years in Italy.

3 words that prove a picture is not worth a 1000 words

Brocade silk used for dresses, accessories and handbagsThe idea when writing a product description, is not only to make the item appear appealing, but to describe it so well that you cover all the “holes” that a picture can not fill.

What can’t a picture tell you? Well, how about size. Unless you have a life size image available it is virtually impossible for someone to look at an a photo and calculate how big the item is – at least without some kind of reference in the photo or the complex computer technology found only in CSI or Bones.

Texture is another perfect example, a photo (no matter how good it is) can deceive the eye so easily. Is it possible to SEE soft, or ridigd or prickly? We see things that insinuate that something is prickly – you look at a cactus and see needles you think “youch!” you look at bird and see feathers and think – “soft”.

Though most would have a vague idea that the word brocade, in the traditional sense, is a class of richly decorative material. Would they know that it is mainly silk, typically woven on a draw loom and would they also know that it is easy to note because the ornamental features that make up brocade frequently create a low relief effect. Would they know this is a tradition perfected in Italy mainly areas like Florence – famous for its silk and leather production. And more important, would they know how to compare it to a flocked brocade?

flocked brocade for shoes and handbagsSo what is a flocked brocade? The difference between a brocade and a flocked brocade is the production method. A “normal” brocade material, one which can be used for clothing, dresses, handbags and accessories is typically a shuttle-woven fabric that gives an embossed effect to the cloth so that it shows a low relief. Whereas a flocked material consists of a “process of depositing many small fiber particles onto a surface”, thus giving it a low relief effect. And though today’s flocked materials are normally done with a flocking machine which allows for the application with a high-voltage electric field

“Historians claim that flocking can be traced back to circa 1000 BC, when the Chinese used resin glue to bond natural fibers to fabrics.”

Yet even when you know all of this, can you distinguish a flocked brocade from an embossed brocade with a photo online? An embossed brocade still implies a heavily ornate design of swirls and leaves but it also expands and includes designs like imitation crocodile or python skin. the method changes. Normally it is found on material that is soft and thick so that the relief design will be more evident, like in leather. The embossed relief is actually pressed into the leather, crushing some areas and leaving the “design” part.

What’s cooking today at Pierotucci in Tuscany Italy?

Fortunata Designer Leather Tote BagIt’s just a little over a year since we have come out with our latest designer handbag model, the Fortunata Designer Tote Bag.  Unique in many ways, this bag actually requires more prep work than any other Italian leather handbag we produce.  This prep time is primarily due to the  constantly changing aspect of the handbag.  By definition this is a limited edition bag, we make only enough bags to consume that particular leather – when it is finished, no more bags.   This means that each bag needs to be profiled ex-nuovo, or rather each time we get a new type of leather, then we need to rematch it with the accent leather, the lining and the hardware such as zips and threads.  Since the concept of this bag was to “recuperate” what we have in house, that means that all zips and canvas to make the removeable and adjustable straps come from stock.

Fortunata Bags from Pierotucci

Above you can see Betta studying the work-up sheets and matching colored zips to the one of the elements of the bag (lining, primary leather or accent leather).  It takes a lot of patience, a good memory for what Pierotucci has in stock and a trained eye for color combinations . . . and Betta would say some killer butt muscels for climbing up and down the ladder to search for just the right combo :-)

Deadly combination: Chocolate, Fashion and Designer Handbags

This morning while breezing through my tweets I hit upon an image that mixed two of my favorite things – chocolate and fashion! I just had to save it and devour it privately- even if it was only virtually!  Then I thought, I really shouldn’t be so greedy and pinned it on my Pinterest account (with much deserving results!) and now I am going to share with all my fellow bloggers.

Chocolate and Designer Fashion

I am putting both these sites out there for credit because honestly I can’t find the exact source to link BUT both of these sites are worth the visit!

Eat Love and Savor, the name kind of says it all

And of course, I am going to add a touch of our own with this new limited edition (only 14 designer bags available)  FORTUNATA in black patent leather with chocolate colored leather accents:

Sometimes a designer handbag is the proverbial cherry on the cake

When you are dressing and spending so much time agonizing over just the right color top, matching heels – picking out the perfect jacket and lipstick – its impossible to ignore the effect that just the right handbag can have on your outfit.   When our designer sits down to start matching up leather handbag bases with contrasting top handles, accents and canvas straps he takes this into consideration.  He knows that some just want a loud statement with color, texture and design and some just want a handbag that is simple elegant and timeless.

With this in mind, we are announcing the addition of  more FORTUNTA designer Tote handabags in some great colors and mix and matches..

Faux alligator skin in a designer Italian leather purse from Pierotucci in ItalyThe theme in this batch is playing on the contrast between handbag base and the leather accents, just check out the mix and match of colors.  For example the classic black bag with colorful accents such as green, tangerine, brown and cherry red. This new selection of Fortunta concentrate on mixing basic colors with splashes of contrasting colors – yet keeping the interiors of these handbags simple and clean with solid colors.

Since these designer hand bags are a limited edition and they are all part of a numbered series, therefore our designer felt he could play with some of the more trendy colors out this year like the tangerine orange color or the gold metallics.

We made a promise at the beginning of 2012 and that was to always have something new on line every week. And thus far, we have managed to keep this promise! We have been adding new leather jackets, fashion jewelry from Italian designers, 18k gold designs in filigree and that’s not all we have a restyling of the Toscanella brand coming up soon.
